Jack Welbourne

Jack mugshot (1)

Jack studied ceramics at Plymouth College of Art, then a degree at Cardiff Met University. Also a useful residential at the renowned Gothenburg School of Craft and Design in Sweden. He was apprenticed part-time to Jeremy at the Pottery in 2013 and 2014, becoming a valuable member of the Wobage team. Jack has since helped us with kiln-building projects, firstly at Aberystwyth’s ICF (International Ceramics Festival) where we built and wood-fired a small ‘back-yard’ Phoenix kiln, and subsequently a much bigger Phoenix salt-kiln.

Jeremy mentored a group of young graduate students in a project entitled ‘Clay & Vapour’ in 2023 & 2024, led by Jack and Zoe Gingell of Cardiff Made Gallery. Following completion of this wonderful project and Exhibition, the gas salt-kiln that Jack and his fellow ‘Salty Boys’ were using, has been moved to one of the Wobage kiln sites, where they continue to develop and salt-fire a range of one-off pieces.

Jack now has a large workshop in Cardiff, Wales, One Wall Studios on Fox Lane, where he makes a comprehensive range of reduction-fired stoneware tableware for daily use, alongside one-off pieces and his gas-fired salt-glaze.

We are delighted that Jack is now returning to Wobage as a regular tutor and demonstrator on our Summer school programme, to share his skills, knowledge and deep enthusiasm for his craft. His talent in throwing large pots, including coil and throw techniques, have been enjoyed by several student cohorts joining our week long ‘Big Improvers’ course.
