Description
This 2 day course is aimed at more experienced makers, specifically to develop their various lid-making skills. If you’re looking to fill your Summer with foundational throwing, it’s a perfect accompaniment to the other 2 day intensive earlier in this season ‘Up-right!’ 24/25 June.
We will cover numerous types of lid making, including one of the most challenging: An ‘All-in-one right-way-up’ traditional lid where the complete lid and it’s integral flange and knob are thrown in one piece wet on the wheel, the right way up. Some students may wish to use the full 2 days for lid-making alone, but Jem will encourage students to explore moderately sized jars and casseroles and potential lid configurations to match, a subject so diverse so as to offer an abundance of creative avenues and skill challenges for participants.
It will be expected that students attending this course will already have some experience in wheel throwing. The course will cater for students at very different levels of capability. However, applications are welcome only from students who are confidently already able to centre and comfortably lift-up 1 kilo or more of clay in to an upright shape. If you are unsure what level you are at, and whether or not this course is suitable for you, please don’t hesitate to get in touch for a chat.
Since this course is designed to advance student’s throwing technique rather than complete refined pots, we will not be inviting students to select any of the work that is made during the course for gloss-firing or bisque-firing. Students may take home any of the work that they make green, within reason, for which there will be a clay charge on the last day of £1.50 per lb.
The studio invites a maximum of 9 students for this course. Each participant will enjoy unlimited access to a power wheel for the full duration. These are predominantly Fitzwilliam Rayefco’s, all of which are fitted with hand controls to enable pedal-free throwing for large pot-making. The studio also accommodates a couple of Alsagers.
This 2-day course begins on Tuesday 29th July, and completes at 4pm on Wednesday 30th. Tuition hours are 10-4pm. The studio is freely available for students to work outside of these hours, after tuition hours on Tuesday evening and beforehand on Wednesday morning, should you wish. Petra’s fabulous home-made vegetarian lunches along with morning and afternoon refreshments are included in the price of this course.
